Description

Hamburger Steak with Onions and Gravy is a classic comfort food dish featuring seasoned ground beef patties smothered in a rich onion gravy, perfect for pairing with mashed potatoes or rice.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • ¼ cup bread crumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ teaspoon seasoned salt
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ⅛ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 cup thinly sliced onion
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 1 tablespoon cooking sherry
  • ½ teaspoon seasoned salt

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, bread crumbs, egg, Worcestershire sauce, seasoned salt, onion powder, garlic powder, and black pepper. Mix well and shape the mixture into 4 patties.
  2. Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for about 4–5 minutes per side, or until they are browned and cooked through. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  3. In the same skillet, add the thinly sliced onions and cook over medium heat for 4–5 minutes, or until the onions are softened and beginning to caramelize.
  4. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir well to combine. Cook for 1–2 minutes to remove the raw flour taste.
  5. Gradually add the beef broth, stirring constantly, to create a smooth gravy. Stir in the cooking sherry and seasoned salt.
  6. Return the patties to the skillet and simmer for 5–7 minutes, or until the gravy has thickened and the patties are heated through.
  7. Serve the hamburger steaks topped with the onion gravy. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Use lean ground beef to reduce fat content.
  • For extra richness, substitute part of the beef broth with cream or milk.
  • Delicious served over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
