Ingredients
-
2 tablespoons olive oil
-
1 large white onion, finely diced
-
5 garlic cloves, finely minced
-
1 pound Italian sausage (removed from casings, hot sausage used)
-
1 and ½ pounds lean ground beef
-
3 cups (28 ounce) crushed tomatoes
-
2 cups (16 ounce) tomato sauce
-
1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste
-
2 tablespoons brown sugar
-
1–2 teaspoons salt (to taste)
-
½ teaspoon ground black pepper
-
2 teaspoons dried basil
-
2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
-
½ teaspoon fennel seeds
-
¼–1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
Instructions
-
Heat olive oil in a large Dutch oven over medium heat. Add diced onion and minced garlic. Sauté until onions are softened and translucent (about 3-5 minutes). Be careful not to burn the garlic.
-
Add Italian sausage and ground beef, cooking until browned. Use a wooden spoon to break up the meat as it cooks.
-
Once the meat is browned, drain any excess grease from the pot.
-
Return the pot to the heat and add crushed tomatoes and tomato sauce. Add a little water to the jars, shake, and pour into the pot.
-
Stir in tomato paste, brown sugar, salt, pepper, dried basil, Italian seasoning, fennel seeds, and red pepper flakes (if using).
-
Reduce heat to low and simmer for 1.5 to 2 hours, stirring occasionally, skimming fat from the surface as needed. Taste and adjust seasoning as necessary.
-
Use this rich sauce for spaghetti, lasagna, or other pasta dishes.
Notes
-
This meat sauce can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4-5 days, or frozen for up to 3 months.
-
Adjust the heat level by adding more or less crushed red pepper flakes depending on your spice preference.
