Description

This Homemade Meat Sauce is the ultimate comfort food, thick, hearty, and packed with meaty goodness! A delicious combination of lean ground beef and spicy Italian sausage, this sauce is perfect for spaghetti, lasagna, or any pasta dish. It’s simmered for hours to develop rich flavors, making it a family favorite.

Ingredients

Scale
  1. 2 tablespoons olive oil

  2. 1 large white onion, finely diced

  3. 5 garlic cloves, finely minced

  4. 1 pound Italian sausage (removed from casings, hot sausage used)

  5. 1 and ½ pounds lean ground beef

  6. 3 cups (28 ounce) crushed tomatoes

  7. 2 cups (16 ounce) tomato sauce

  8. 1 (6 ounce) can tomato paste

  9. 2 tablespoons brown sugar

  10. 12 teaspoons salt (to taste)

  11. ½ teaspoon ground black pepper

  12. 2 teaspoons dried basil

  13. 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning

  14. ½ teaspoon fennel seeds

  15. ¼1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions

  • Heat olive oil in a large Dutch oven over medium heat. Add diced onion and minced garlic. Sauté until onions are softened and translucent (about 3-5 minutes). Be careful not to burn the garlic.

  • Add Italian sausage and ground beef, cooking until browned. Use a wooden spoon to break up the meat as it cooks.

  • Once the meat is browned, drain any excess grease from the pot.

  • Return the pot to the heat and add crushed tomatoes and tomato sauce. Add a little water to the jars, shake, and pour into the pot.

  • Stir in tomato paste, brown sugar, salt, pepper, dried basil, Italian seasoning, fennel seeds, and red pepper flakes (if using).

  • Reduce heat to low and simmer for 1.5 to 2 hours, stirring occasionally, skimming fat from the surface as needed. Taste and adjust seasoning as necessary.

  • Use this rich sauce for spaghetti, lasagna, or other pasta dishes.

Notes

  • This meat sauce can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4-5 days, or frozen for up to 3 months.

  • Adjust the heat level by adding more or less crushed red pepper flakes depending on your spice preference.
