  1. For the Caramelized Onions:
    • 3 large onions, thinly sliced
    • 2 tbsp butter
    • 1 tbsp olive oil
    • 1/2 tsp salt
    • 1/2 tsp black pepper
    • 1 tsp balsamic vinegar (or Worcestershire sauce)
    • 1 tsp brown sugar (optional, enhances sweetness)

    For the Dip Base:

    • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
    • 1/2 cup sour cream
    • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
    • 1 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese (or sharp cheddar)
    • 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
    • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
    • 1/2 tsp onion powder
    • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper (optional, for heat)

    For Topping:

    1. 1/4 cup additional shredded cheese
    2. 1 tbsp chopped fresh chives (optional)

Instructions

  • Caramelize the Onions
    • In a large skillet, melt butter and olive oil over medium-low heat.
    • Add sliced onions, salt, and black pepper, stirring occasionally.
    • Cook for 25-30 minutes, stirring often, until onions turn deep golden brown.
    • Stir in balsamic vinegar and brown sugar (if using), cooking for 2 more minutes. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
  • Make the Dip Mixture
    • In a large bowl, mix cream cheese, sour cream, mayonnaise, shredded cheeses, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper.
    • Stir in the caramelized onions, reserving a spoonful for topping.
  • Bake Until Hot & Bubbly
    • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Spread the dip mixture into a small baking dish.
    • Top with extra shredded cheese and reserved caramelized onions.
    • Bake for 20-25 minutes, until golden and bubbly.
  • Serve & Enjoy!
    • Garnish with fresh chives (optional).
    • Serve hot with toasted bread, crackers, or chips!

Notes

  • For extra sweetness, the brown sugar can be added to the caramelized onions, but it’s optional depending on your taste.
  • If you don’t have Gruyère or Swiss cheese, sharp cheddar works wonderfully as a substitute.
  • You can make the caramelized onions in advance and store them in the fridge until ready to use in the dip.
  • For extra flavor, feel free to add more cayenne pepper or even a dash of smoked paprika.
