- 4 large potatoes, thinly sliced
- 2 cups heavy cream
- 2 cups shredded cheese (cheddar or gruyere)
- 1 onion, sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 tablespoon fresh thyme (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a greased baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes.
- Add half of the sliced onions and minced garlic over the potatoes.
- Sprinkle with salt, pepper, and half of the shredded cheese.
- Pour half of the heavy cream over the layer of potatoes.
- Repeat with the remaining potatoes, onions, garlic, cheese, and cream.
- Dot the top with butter and sprinkle with fresh thyme (optional).
- Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until the top is golden and bubbly.
- Let the dish cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- You can use any cheese you like, but cheddar or gruyere works beautifully in this dish.
- If you prefer a thicker sauce, reduce the heavy cream by a little and add a tablespoon of flour when you layer the potatoes.
