This authentic Southern West Virginia hot dog chili sauce is the perfect topping for any hot dog! Rich, flavorful, and perfectly seasoned with chili powder, paprika, and Worcestershire sauce, it’s a must-have at every cookout. Once you try it, you’ll never settle for store-bought again!

Ingredients

Scale
  1. 1 lb ground beef
  2. 1 tsp chili powder
  3. 1 tsp paprika
  4. 1 tsp cumin
  5. 1 tsp kosher salt
  6. 1 tsp black pepper
  7. 1 tbsp dried minced onion
  8. 1 tbsp garlic powder
  9. Pinch of red pepper flakes
  10. 23 cups water (enough to cover the meat)
  11. 1 cup ketchup
  12. ¼ cup brown sugar
  13. ¼ cup Worcestershire sauce

Instructions

  • Simmer the Beef:
Place the ground beef in a deep skillet or saucepan.
Add chili powder, paprika, cumin, salt, black pepper, dried minced onion, garlic powder, and red pepper flakes.
Pour in 2-3 cups of water (enough to cover the meat).
Simmer on low heat for 1-2 hours, stirring occasionally.

  • Add the Sweet & Tangy Flavors:
Stir in the ketchup, brown sugar, and Worcestershire sauce.
Continue simmering for 30-45 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken.

  • Serve & Enjoy!
Spoon generously over grilled hot dogs on soft buns.
Top with mustard, diced onions, and slaw for the full West Virginia experience!

Notes

  • This chili sauce can be made ahead of time and stored in the fridge for up to a week.
  • The sauce thickens as it cools, so feel free to add a bit more water to reach your preferred consistency when reheating.

  • If you like it spicier, add extra red pepper flakes or some hot sauce to taste.
