Description
These Southern Cornbread Hoecakes are crispy, golden, and perfect for serving alongside your favorite comfort foods! With a simple mix of cornmeal, salt, sugar, and baking powder, these hoecakes are fried to perfection in vegetable oil, creating a warm, crispy exterior and a tender, flavorful interior. Serve them hot with butter, honey, or as a side dish to stews, soups, or greens!
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup cornmeal (preferably stone-ground)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon sugar (optional, for a touch of sweetness)
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 3/4 cup hot water
- 2–3 tablespoons vegetable oil
Instructions
- Prepare the Batter: In a mixing bowl, combine the cornmeal, salt, sugar (if using), and baking powder. Gradually add the hot water, stirring until the batter is smooth. The consistency should be thick but spreadable. If needed, add a little more water.
- Heat the Oil: Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat. The oil should be hot enough to sizzle when a drop of batter is added.
- Fry the Hoecakes: Scoop 2-3 tablespoons of batter into the skillet for each hoecake, flattening slightly with the back of a spoon. Cook for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and crispy.
- Drain and Serve: Remove the hoecakes and drain on a paper towel-lined plate. Serve hot with butter, honey, or alongside soups, stews, or greens.
Notes
- These hoecakes are best served immediately while hot and crispy.
- You can adjust the sweetness by increasing or omitting the sugar.
- For a more savory variation, you can add chopped green onions or herbs to the batter.
