Description

These Golden and Chewy Homemade Soft Pretzels are a delightful treat with a buttery finish, perfect for snacking or as a side for any meal. Fresh out of the oven, they’re soft on the inside and crisp on the outside!

Ingredients

Scale
  1. 4 cups all-purpose flour

  2. 2 ¼ tsp instant yeast

  3. 1 ½ cups warm water

  4. 1 tbsp sugar

  5. 1 tsp salt

  6. 2 tbsp melted butter

  7. ½ cup baking soda (for water bath)

  8. 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

  9. Coarse salt (for topping)

Instructions

  • Activate the Yeast: In a bowl, mix warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let sit for 5 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy.

  • Make the Dough: Stir in salt, melted butter, and flour into the yeast mixture. Knead the dough until smooth and elastic.

  • Let the Dough Rise: Cover the dough and let it rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.

  • Prepare the Oven: Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

  • Shape the Pretzels: Divide the dough into 8 pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope and shape it into a pretzel.

  • Boil the Pretzels: In a pot, bring water to a boil, and add baking soda. Dip each pretzel into the boiling water for 30 seconds, then remove and place on the prepared baking sheet.

  • Add the Egg Wash: Brush each pretzel with the beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse salt.

  • Bake the Pretzels: Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy on the outside.

  • Cool and Serve: Let the pretzels cool slightly before enjoying them warm.

Notes

  • For a softer texture, reduce the baking time slightly or omit the baking soda water bath.

  • Try adding your favorite dipping sauces like mustard or cheese for an extra treat!

  • If the dough feels too sticky, add a bit more flour until you can knead it comfortably.
