Ingredients
-
4 cups all-purpose flour
-
2 ¼ tsp instant yeast
-
1 ½ cups warm water
-
1 tbsp sugar
-
1 tsp salt
-
2 tbsp melted butter
-
½ cup baking soda (for water bath)
-
1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
-
Coarse salt (for topping)
Instructions
-
Activate the Yeast: In a bowl, mix warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let sit for 5 minutes until the mixture becomes foamy.
-
Make the Dough: Stir in salt, melted butter, and flour into the yeast mixture. Knead the dough until smooth and elastic.
-
Let the Dough Rise: Cover the dough and let it rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
-
Prepare the Oven: Preheat oven to 450°F (230°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
-
Shape the Pretzels: Divide the dough into 8 pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope and shape it into a pretzel.
-
Boil the Pretzels: In a pot, bring water to a boil, and add baking soda. Dip each pretzel into the boiling water for 30 seconds, then remove and place on the prepared baking sheet.
-
Add the Egg Wash: Brush each pretzel with the beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse salt.
-
Bake the Pretzels: Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy on the outside.
-
Cool and Serve: Let the pretzels cool slightly before enjoying them warm.
Notes
-
For a softer texture, reduce the baking time slightly or omit the baking soda water bath.
-
Try adding your favorite dipping sauces like mustard or cheese for an extra treat!
-
If the dough feels too sticky, add a bit more flour until you can knead it comfortably.
