This Potatoes au Gratin recipe is a classic French dish featuring thinly sliced potatoes layered with a rich, creamy cheese sauce and baked to golden perfection. Perfect for family dinners, holidays, or special occasions, this easy side dish is irresistibly cheesy and flavorful!

Ingredients

Scale
  1. 1.5 kg potatoes
  2. 1½ cups heavy cream
  3. 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  4. 3 cloves garlic, minced
  5. 1½ cups cheddar cheese, grated
  6. ⅓ cup parmesan cheese, grated (plus extra for topping)
  7. 1 tsp salt
  8. ½ tsp pepper

Instructions

  • Preheat oven: Set the oven to 180°C (356°F). Grease a baking dish.
  • Prepare the cream mixture: In a bowl, whisk together the heavy cream, melted butter, minced garlic, cheddar cheese, parmesan cheese, salt, and pepper. Set aside.
  • Slice the potatoes: Use a mandoline or sharp knife to slice the potatoes thinly. Toss the slices in the cream mixture until they are well coated.
  • Assemble and bake: Stack the potato slices upright in the prepared baking dish. Pour any remaining cream mixture over the top. Season with extra salt and pepper. Cover with foil and bake for 1 hour 15 minutes until the potatoes are tender.
  • Golden topping: Remove the foil, sprinkle with extra parmesan cheese, and bake for an additional 10 minutes until the top is golden brown.

  • Serve: Let the dish cool for 5 minutes before serving. Enjoy!

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, try using a mix of Gruyère and cheddar cheese.
  • The dish can be assembled a day ahead and baked the next day for convenience.

  • If you prefer a crispy top, broil the dish for an additional 2-3 minutes after baking.
