Description

Polish Stuffed Cabbage Rolls (Gołąbki) are hearty, flavorful rolls filled with a savory mixture of ground beef, rice, and spices, simmered in a rich tomato-based sauce. This classic Polish dish is perfect for a comforting meal and is guaranteed to please the whole family.

Ingredients

Scale
  1. For the Cabbage Rolls:

    • 1 large cabbage
    • 1 lb ground beef
    • 1 cup cooked rice
    • 1 large onion (chopped)
    • 2 cloves garlic (minced)
    • 1 egg
    • 1 tsp salt
    • ½ tsp black pepper
  2. For the Sauce:

    • 2 cups tomato sauce
    • 1 cup beef broth
    • 1 tbsp sugar
    • 1 tbsp lemon juice
  3. Optional Garnish:

    1. Fresh dill

Instructions

  • Boil the Cabbage:
Boil the cabbage until the leaves are tender, about 10-15 minutes. Let cool, then carefully remove the leaves from the cabbage head.

  • Prepare the Filling:
In a large bowl, combine ground beef, cooked rice, chopped onion, minced garlic, egg, salt, and black pepper. Mix well to form the stuffing mixture.

  • Assemble the Cabbage Rolls:
Place a small amount of the filling (about 2-3 tablespoons) on each cabbage leaf. Fold the sides of the leaf over the filling, then roll up tightly, like a burrito, to form a cylinder.

  • Prepare the Sauce:
In a separate bowl, mix tomato sauce, beef broth, sugar, and lemon juice. Stir to combine.

  • Assemble the Cabbage Rolls in a Baking Dish:
Arrange the cabbage rolls tightly in a baking dish. Pour the sauce mixture over the top, ensuring the rolls are mostly covered.

  • Bake:
Cover the baking dish with foil and bake at 350°F for 1.5 to 2 hours, or until the cabbage is fully tender and the flavors have melded.

  • Serve and Garnish:
Garnish with fresh dill (optional) and serve hot.

Notes

  • You can freeze leftover cabbage rolls for up to 3 months. Just store them in an airtight container or freezer bag.
  • For an extra layer of flavor, consider adding smoked paprika or a bit of ground sausage to the beef mixture.
  • Fresh dill is optional, but it adds a nice herbal freshness to the dish.
