Ingredients

Scale
  1. For the Caramel Base:
    • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
    • 1 cup packed brown sugar
    • 2 tablespoons corn syrup
  2. For the French Toast:
    • 1 loaf French bread or brioche, cut into 1-inch slices
    • 5 large eggs
    • 1 1/2 cups whole milk
    • 1/2 cup heavy cream
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
    • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
    • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  3. For Topping (Optional):
    • Powdered sugar
    • Fresh berries
    • Maple syrup

Instructions

  • Make the Caramel Base: In a medium saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the brown sugar and corn syrup, cooking until the mixture is smooth and bubbly, about 2-3 minutes. Pour the caramel mixture into the bottom of a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
  • Arrange the Bread: Layer the slices of French bread or brioche over the caramel base, slightly overlapping as needed.
  • Make the Custard: In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, heavy cream, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until smooth.
  • Assemble the Dish: Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread slices, ensuring all the pieces are soaked.
  • Refrigerate: Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 8 hours, or overnight.
  • Bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the dish from the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for 20 minutes. Bake uncovered for 40-45 minutes, or until golden brown and set.
  • Serve: Allow the French toast to cool for 5 minutes before serving. Dust with powdered sugar and serve with fresh berries and maple syrup.

Notes

  • Make sure to refrigerate overnight for the best results, allowing the bread to fully soak in the custard mixture.
  • Brioche will give a richer flavor, but French bread works perfectly well.
  • For a crispy top, you can broil it for 1-2 minutes at the end of baking.
