Description

These Old-Fashioned Chocolate Donut Holes are tender and rich, fried to perfection and coated with a luscious salted chocolate hazelnut glaze that adds a delightful sweet-salty contrast. Perfect bite-sized treats for any chocolate lover!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 tbsp salted butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 egg yolks, room temperature
  • 1 cup Greek yogurt or sour cream, room temperature
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 3/4 cups cake flour (or all-purpose flour)
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp espresso powder or granules
  • Neutral oil, for frying (e.g., high-heat olive oil or avocado oil)
  • For the glaze:
    • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
    • 1/2 cup chocolate hazelnut spread
    • 1 tsp vanilla extract
    • 1 tsp salt
    • 34 tbsp milk of choice

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, whisk melted butter and sugar until combined.
  2. Add egg yolks, Greek yogurt, and vanilla extract; mix well.
  3. In a separate bowl, sift together cake flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, salt, and espresso powder.
  4. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet, mixing until smooth.
  5. Heat neutral oil in a deep fryer or heavy pot to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Using a small scoop or spoon, carefully drop batter into hot oil, frying donut holes until puffed and cooked through, about 3-4 minutes, turning occasionally. Drain on paper towels.
  7. For the glaze, whisk powdered sugar, chocolate hazelnut spread, vanilla, salt, and milk until smooth and pourable.
  8. Dip warm donut holes into glaze or drizzle glaze over them.
  9. Let glaze set slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Ensure oil temperature stays steady at 350°F for even frying.
  • Drain donut holes well on paper towels to avoid sogginess.
  • Use cake flour for a lighter, softer texture or all-purpose for a bit denser bite.
  • Glaze consistency can be adjusted by adding more or less milk.
  • Serve fresh for the best texture and flavor.
