- 5 slices Japanese milk bread

For the whipped crème:
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
For the custard (optional):
- 3/4 cup whole milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/8 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 egg yolks
- 1 tablespoon unsalted butter

- Strawberries, stem removed and halved
- Granulated sugar
Instructions
- Make the whipped crème: Beat heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla until stiff peaks form. Chill until ready to use.
- Optional custard: In a saucepan, whisk milk, vanilla, salt, cornstarch, sugar, and egg yolks over medium heat. Stir constantly until thickened. Remove from heat, stir in butter, and let cool completely.
- Assemble the sandwiches: Spread whipped crème (and custard, if using) onto a slice of milk bread. Add halved strawberries and top with another slice of bread.
- Press lightly to seal and trim crusts if desired.
- Heat vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat. Lightly fry each sandwich until golden and crisp on both sides.
- Drain on paper towels and dust with granulated sugar. Serve warm or chilled.
