Ingredients

Scale

For the bread:

  • 5 slices Japanese milk bread
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

For the whipped crème:

  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For the custard (optional):

  • 3/4 cup whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter

Other:

  • Strawberries, stem removed and halved
  • Granulated sugar

Instructions

  1. Make the whipped crème: Beat heavy cream with powdered sugar and vanilla until stiff peaks form. Chill until ready to use.
  2. Optional custard: In a saucepan, whisk milk, vanilla, salt, cornstarch, sugar, and egg yolks over medium heat. Stir constantly until thickened. Remove from heat, stir in butter, and let cool completely.
  3. Assemble the sandwiches: Spread whipped crème (and custard, if using) onto a slice of milk bread. Add halved strawberries and top with another slice of bread.
  4. Press lightly to seal and trim crusts if desired.
  5. Heat vegetable oil in a pan over medium heat. Lightly fry each sandwich until golden and crisp on both sides.
  6. Drain on paper towels and dust with granulated sugar. Serve warm or chilled.

Notes

  • Use fresh, ripe strawberries for the best flavor and texture.
  • The custard adds extra creaminess but can be skipped for a lighter version.
  • Milk bread can be homemade or store-bought; just make sure it’s soft and fresh.
  • Frying time is short, so watch carefully to avoid burning.
  • Serve immediately for the crispiest texture, or chill for a soft, cool dessert.
