Ingredients

Scale

For the Dough

  • 2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large egg yolks
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup sour cream

For the Filling

  • 1 1/2 cups finely chopped walnuts
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • 1 tablespoon melted butter

Instructions

  1. Mix dry ingredients: In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  2. Cream butter and sugar: In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add wet ingredients: Beat in the egg yolks, vanilla, and sour cream until smooth.
  4. Combine: Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet mixture until a soft dough forms.
  5. Chill dough: Divide dough in half, wrap each in plastic, and refrigerate for at least 1 hour.
  6. Make filling: In a bowl, mix chopped walnuts, brown sugar, cinnamon, milk, and melted butter until well combined.
  7. Roll and fill: On a floured surface, roll out each portion of dough into a rectangle. Spread the filling evenly across the dough.
  8. Roll up: Roll the dough tightly from the long edge into a log.
  9. Slice and bake: Slice into 1-inch cookies and place on a lined baking sheet. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 12–15 minutes, or until edges are golden.
  10. Cool: Transfer cookies to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • Chill the dough thoroughly for easier rolling and cleaner slices.
  • Use pecans or almonds as a variation on the traditional walnut filling.
  • A dash of orange zest in the dough adds a bright twist.
  • Dust cooled cookies with powdered sugar for a festive touch.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days or freeze for up to 2 months.
