Ingredients

Scale
  1. For the Fry Bread:

    • 2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1 tablespoon baking powder
    • 1 cup warm water
    • Vegetable oil for frying

    For the Toppings:

    1. 2 cans (15 oz) pinto beans, drained and rinsed
    2. 1 tablespoon olive oil
    3. 1 can (4 oz) green chiles
    4. 1/2 teaspoon cumin
    5. 1/2 teaspoon salt
    6. 1/4 teaspoon black or white pepper
    7. 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
    8. 1 pound lean ground beef
    9. 2 tablespoons taco seasoning
    10. 1/4 cup warm water
    11. Taco-style toppings of choice (lettuce, tomatoes, cheese, sour cream, etc.)

Instructions

  • Make the Fry Bread:

    • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, salt, and baking powder. Add warm water and mix until combined. Cover with a clean towel and let rest.
  • Prepare the Toppings:

    • Heat olive oil in a large pot over low heat. Add pinto beans, green chiles, cumin, salt, pepper, and onion powder. Stir well, cover, and cook on low heat for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Cook the Ground Beef:

    • In a skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Drain the fat. Add taco seasoning and 1/4 cup water. Simmer for 5 minutes, stirring often.
  • Fry the Bread:

    • Heat 2 inches of vegetable oil in a large pot to 350°F (175°C). Divide the dough into 4 pieces. Press each piece into a 1/2-inch thick circle. Fry each piece until golden brown on both sides. Drain on a wire rack.
  • Assemble the Tacos:

    • Top each fry bread with seasoned beef, beans, and your favorite taco toppings. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • You can make the fry bread dough ahead of time and store it in the fridge for up to 24 hours.
  • Try adding your favorite toppings like guacamole, salsa, jalapeños, or avocado for a customized taco experience.
