Ingredients
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2/3 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup cocoa powder
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 tbsp melted butter
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)
- 3/4 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup cocoa powder
- 1 3/4 cup hot water

Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9-inch baking dish or a similar-sized oven-safe dish. -
Prepare the Cake Batter
In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Mix well.
Add the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Stir until the mixture forms a smooth batter.
If using chopped nuts, fold them into the batter now. -
Transfer the Batter
Pour the cake batter into the greased baking dish. -
Prepare the Fudge Topping
In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar and additional cocoa powder. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the top of the cake batter. -
Add the Hot Water
Carefully pour the hot water over the top of the cake (do not stir!). The water will sink to the bottom and create a fudge sauce while the cake bakes. -
Bake the Cake
Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the cake has risen and the top looks set, with the fudge sauce bubbling underneath. -
Serve
Let the cake cool slightly before serving. It’s delicious served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
Notes
- If you prefer a nut-free version, simply omit the chopped nuts from the batter.
- This dessert is best served warm for the full pudding-like experience.
- You can also drizzle some extra hot fudge sauce on top for an extra indulgent treat.
