  1. 1 cup all-purpose flour
  2. 2/3 cup sugar
  3. 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  4. 2 tsp baking powder
  5. 1/4 tsp salt
  6. 1/2 cup milk
  7. 2 tbsp melted butter
  8. 1 tsp vanilla extract
  9. 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional)
  10. 3/4 cup brown sugar
  11. 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  12. 1 3/4 cup hot water

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven
    Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9-inch baking dish or a similar-sized oven-safe dish.

  2. Prepare the Cake Batter
    In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Mix well.
    Add the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract. Stir until the mixture forms a smooth batter.
    If using chopped nuts, fold them into the batter now.

  3. Transfer the Batter
    Pour the cake batter into the greased baking dish.

  4. Prepare the Fudge Topping
    In a small bowl, combine the brown sugar and additional cocoa powder. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the top of the cake batter.

  5. Add the Hot Water
    Carefully pour the hot water over the top of the cake (do not stir!). The water will sink to the bottom and create a fudge sauce while the cake bakes.

  6. Bake the Cake
    Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the cake has risen and the top looks set, with the fudge sauce bubbling underneath.

  7. Serve
    Let the cake cool slightly before serving. It’s delicious served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

  • If you prefer a nut-free version, simply omit the chopped nuts from the batter.
  • This dessert is best served warm for the full pudding-like experience.

 

  • You can also drizzle some extra hot fudge sauce on top for an extra indulgent treat.
