Description

A comforting and hearty Amish-style casserole featuring seasoned hamburger patties layered with thinly sliced potatoes, onions, creamy milk gravy, and melted cheddar cheese—perfect for cozy family dinners.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 1/2 lbs ground beef
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp onion powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 45 medium russet potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. In a bowl, mix ground beef with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Form into 6 patties.
  3. Lightly brown the patties in a skillet over medium heat. Remove and set aside.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the milk and flour until smooth to make the gravy.
  5. Layer half of the sliced potatoes and onions in the baking dish. Place browned patties on top, then add the remaining potatoes and onions.
  6. Pour the milk gravy evenly over the entire dish. Cover tightly with foil.
  7. Bake covered for 1 hour, until potatoes are tender.
  8. Uncover, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the top, and bake for an additional 15 minutes until cheese is melted and bubbly.
  9. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Use a mandoline slicer for even potato slices that cook uniformly.
  • Add a pinch of thyme or parsley to the beef mixture for extra flavor.
  • Substitute ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option.
