Ingredients
-
For the Hamburger Steaks:
- 1.5 pounds ground beef (80/20 blend recommended for flavor and moisture)
- 1 egg, lightly beaten
- ½ cup breadcrumbs (plain or seasoned)
- 1 small onion, finely chopped (about ½ cup)
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons olive oil or butter
For the Onion Gravy:
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- ½ teaspoon dried thyme
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
Prepare the Hamburger Steaks:
In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, egg, breadcrumbs, chopped onion, minced garlic, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until well combined.
Divide the mixture into 4 equal portions and shape them into oval patties, about ¾-inch thick. Make a slight indentation in the center of each patty to prevent bulging during cooking.
Cook the Hamburger Steaks:
Heat the olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
Add the hamburger steaks and cook for 4-5 minutes per side, or until browned and cooked through (internal temperature should reach 160°F/71°C).
Remove the hamburger steaks from the skillet and set aside.
Make the Onion Gravy:
In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
Add the thinly sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and caramelized, about 10-15 minutes.
Sprinkle the flour over the onions and cook for 1 minute, stirring constantly, to create a roux.
Gradually whisk in the beef broth, ensuring no lumps form.
Add Worcestershire sauce and thyme, and bring the gravy to a simmer. Cook for 5-7 minutes, or until thickened slightly.
Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Combine and Serve:
Return the hamburger steaks to the skillet with the onion gravy. Spoon the gravy over the steaks.
Simmer for a few minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
Serve over mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.
Notes
- Beef Blend: For added flavor, try a blend of ground chuck and sirloin.
- Onion Types: Yellow, white, or red onions work for the gravy. Vidalia onions add sweetness.
- Gravy Thickness: Adjust the consistency by adding more broth if too thick or simmering longer if too thin.
- Make Ahead: The gravy can be made in advance and reheated. The hamburger steaks can also be cooked ahead and gently reheated before serving.
