Ingredients
Scale
4 hot dog buns
2 tablespoons butter, softened
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 teaspoon onion powder
4 hot dogs, split lengthwise (be careful not to cut all the way through)
3 cups shredded cheddar cheese
4 scallions, sliced
Instructions
Flatten the buns with a rolling pin.
In a small bowl, stir butter, garlic powder, and onion powder. Spread all over the outsides of the buns.
Working in batches if needed, in a large skillet over medium heat, sear the hot dogs, turning occasionally, until charred, about 2 minutes per side.
Place a bun butter mixture side down in the skillet and top with 1/2 cup cheddar, a hot dog, a little more cheddar, and one-quarter of the scallions.
Cover and cook over medium heat until cheese melts, then use a spatula to close the bun.
Repeat with the remaining ingredients to make 4 cheese dogs total.
Notes
Adjust the amount of cheese to your preference for a cheesier sandwich.
You can use any type of cheese that melts well, such as mozzarella, Gruyère, or Monterey Jack.
