Description

These crispy tostones are a classic Latin American snack or side dish made from green plantains, fried twice for the ultimate crunch. Naturally gluten-free and made with simple ingredients, tostones are an irresistible addition to your collection of recipes for dinner, recipes appetizers and snacks, and healthy recipes. Whether served with dipping sauces or alongside your favorite entrée, they make a great option for quick and easy dinner recipes, simple high protein meals, or recipes to try when you’re craving something salty and satisfying.

Ingredients

Scale
  1. 3 large green plantains
⅓ cup vegetable oil (or canola, grapeseed, avocado, or peanut oil)
Kosher salt or sea salt flakes, to taste

Instructions

Cut off the ends of each plantain and discard them. Use the tip of a paring knife to slit the peel lengthwise, then cut the plantain in half. Use your thumb or a spoon to lift the peel and remove it.
Slice the plantains at an angle into 1 to 1 ½-inch thick pieces.
Heat the oil in a large non-stick skillet over medium heat. Add the plantain slices in batches and fry for about 1 minute per side, until softened and lightly golden.
Remove the plantains from the pan. Use a tostonera press or a flat-bottomed ramekin to gently flatten each slice to about ¼ inch thickness.
Return the flattened slices to the hot skillet and fry again for about 2 minutes per side, or until crispy and golden brown.
Transfer the tostones to a cooling rack or paper towel-lined plate. Season generously with salt while still hot.
Serve immediately and enjoy.

Notes

  • Best served fresh and hot.

  • Pair with garlic sauce, guacamole, or spicy mayo.

  • For extra crispiness, soak flattened plantains briefly in salted water before the second fry and dry thoroughly.

  • Use only green (unripe) plantains for authentic texture and flavor.
