Description

Sopapillas puff are light, crispy fried pastries made from a simple dough and served with a dusting of powdered sugar and a drizzle of honey. A sweet treat perfect for dessert or a festive snack!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 ½ tablespoons shortening
  • ½ cup warm water
  • 3 cups vegetable oil, for frying
  • Powdered sugar (optional, for garnish)
  • Honey (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Cut in the shortening using a pastry blender or fork until mixture is crumbly.
  3. Slowly stir in warm water until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough in the bowl for 2-3 minutes until smooth. Do not overwork.
  5. Place dough in a clean bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let rest for 15 minutes.
  6. Heat 2 inches of vegetable oil in a heavy skillet or Dutch oven to 350°F–360°F.
  7. Roll dough out on a lightly floured surface into a 9×12 inch rectangle.
  8. Cut dough into 12 squares or rectangles using a pizza cutter or knife.
  9. Fry in batches for 1–2 minutes per side, until golden brown.
  10. Remove with a slotted spoon and place on paper towels to drain.
  11. Sprinkle with powdered sugar and drizzle with honey if desired.

Notes

  • Do not overcrowd the pan when frying; this ensures even cooking.
  • Use a thermometer to maintain the correct oil temperature for best puff and crispness.
  • These are best served warm right after frying.
