Description
Sopapillas puff are light, crispy fried pastries made from a simple dough and served with a dusting of powdered sugar and a drizzle of honey. A sweet treat perfect for dessert or a festive snack!

- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled
- 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 ½ tablespoons shortening
- ½ cup warm water
- 3 cups vegetable oil, for frying
- Powdered sugar (optional, for garnish)
- Honey (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Cut in the shortening using a pastry blender or fork until mixture is crumbly.
- Slowly stir in warm water until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough in the bowl for 2-3 minutes until smooth. Do not overwork.
- Place dough in a clean bowl, cover with plastic wrap, and let rest for 15 minutes.
- Heat 2 inches of vegetable oil in a heavy skillet or Dutch oven to 350°F–360°F.
- Roll dough out on a lightly floured surface into a 9×12 inch rectangle.
- Cut dough into 12 squares or rectangles using a pizza cutter or knife.
- Fry in batches for 1–2 minutes per side, until golden brown.
- Remove with a slotted spoon and place on paper towels to drain.
- Sprinkle with powdered sugar and drizzle with honey if desired.
Notes
- Do not overcrowd the pan when frying; this ensures even cooking.
- Use a thermometer to maintain the correct oil temperature for best puff and crispness.
- These are best served warm right after frying.
