Description
This classic Crumpet Recipe delivers soft, spongy, and delightfully holey crumpets perfect for toasting and topping with butter, jam, or honey — a comforting breakfast or tea-time treat.
Ingredients
Scale
- 150g (1 cup) white flour (plain/all-purpose)
- 200ml (3/4 cup + 1 tbsp) warm water
- 1/2 tsp salt (cooking/kosher salt or 1/4 tsp table salt)
- 1/2 tsp white sugar
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp instant/rapid-rise yeast (or dry active yeast)
- 1 tbsp warm water (just tap water)
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter (melted) or vegetable oil
Instructions
- In a small bowl, combine the yeast and 1 tbsp warm water. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt, sugar, and baking powder. Add the yeast mixture and warm water. Mix until you have a smooth batter. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let it rest for 30 minutes.
- Heat a non-stick frying pan or griddle over medium-low heat and lightly grease with butter or oil. Use crumpet rings (or cookie cutters) to shape the crumpets. Spoon the batter into the rings, filling them halfway.
- Let the crumpets cook for about 5–7 minutes, or until the top is set and bubbly. You can check if they’re ready to flip by gently lifting one side; it should be firm.
- Carefully flip the crumpets over and cook for another 1–2 minutes until golden brown.
- Remove the crumpets from the rings and brush them with melted butter. Serve warm with your favorite toppings. Enjoy!
Notes
- Use a non-stick skillet and grease well to prevent sticking.
- Resting the batter helps develop flavor and texture.
- Crumpet rings ensure even, round shapes but are optional.
- Serve with butter, honey, jam, or even cheese for a savory twist.
