Description

This French Onion Ground Beef and Rice Casserole is a comforting, hearty dish with layers of caramelized onions, savory ground beef, and gooey cheese. Perfect for a family dinner or a cozy night in

Ingredients

Scale
  1. 1 lb ground beef
  2. 1 onion, thinly sliced
  3. 2 tbsp olive oil
  4. 2 cloves garlic, minced
  5. 1 cup uncooked long-grain rice
  6. 2 cups beef broth
  7. 1 cup French onion soup (canned or homemade)
  8. 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  9. 1 tsp dried thyme
  10. 1/2 tsp black pepper
  11. Salt to taste
  12. 1 cup shredded Swiss cheese (or mozzarella)
  13. 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  • Cook the Ground Beef: In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned. Drain excess fat and set aside.
  • Sauté the Onion: In the same skillet, add the sliced onion and cook for 5-7 minutes, stirring frequently, until softened and caramelized. Add garlic and cook for another minute.
  • Combine the Ingredients: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a large casserole dish, combine the cooked beef, caramelized onions, rice, beef broth, French onion soup, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, pepper, and salt. Stir well to combine.
  • Bake: Cover with foil and bake for 25-30 minutes. Remove foil, sprinkle shredded cheese over the top, and bake for an additional 10 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  • Serve: Garnish with fresh parsley and serve hot.

Notes

  • For extra flavor, you can substitute the Swiss cheese with Gruyère.
  • You can make this dish ahead of time and refrigerate it until you’re ready to bake!
  • If you prefer a crunchier top, you can broil for the last 2 minutes of baking.
