These tender, caramelized apples with cinnamon and brown sugar are slow-cooked to perfection. A comforting, sweet side dish that’s perfect on its own or as a topping for pancakes, waffles, or ice cream!
6 large tart apples, peeled, cored, and sliced
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 cup butter, cut into small pieces
Prepare the apples: Place the sliced apples in the bowl of the slow cooker.
Make the sugar mixture: In a small bowl, mix together granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Sprinkle this mixture over the apples and toss to coat.
Add butter: Dot the top of the apples with small pieces of butter.
Slow cook: Cover and cook on low for 4 hours, or until the apples are soft and the sauce is bubbly.
Serve: Stir the apples well before serving to coat them with the sauce. Serve warm as a side dish, or as a topping for ice cream or pancakes.
Use tart apples like Granny Smith for the best balance of sweetness and acidity.
If you prefer a sweeter version, you can adjust the amount of sugar to your liking.
This recipe can be doubled if you need to serve a larger crowd.
For extra flavor, you can add a dash of vanilla extract during the last hour of cooking.
