Description
Create sparkling Homemade Rock Candy with just sugar, water, and a little patience! A fun, science-meets-sweets project perfect for kids, gifts, or colorful treats.
Ingredients
Scale
- 12+ cups granulated sugar
- 4 cups warm water
- Food coloring (optional)
- Candy flavoring (optional)
- 12 wooden skewers (6-inch)
- 6 quart-sized mason jars
- 12 clothespins
Instructions
- Soak wooden skewers in water for 30 minutes, then roll in granulated sugar. Let them dry completely—this helps crystals form.
- In a large pot, stir 8 cups of sugar into the warm water until no more dissolves.
- Bring the mixture to a gentle boil, adding the remaining sugar slowly until it becomes fully saturated (about 4+ more cups). Stir constantly.
- Remove from heat and let the syrup cool for 20–30 minutes.
- Pour syrup evenly into the mason jars. Add food coloring or flavoring if desired and stir gently.
- Place two sugar-coated skewers in each jar, ensuring they do not touch each other or the sides. Use clothespins laid across the top of the jar to hold skewers in place.
- Set jars in a cool, undisturbed area for 5–10 days. Watch as crystals slowly form on the skewers.
- Once crystals are to your liking, remove the skewers and let them dry for a few minutes before enjoying.
Notes
- Ensure syrup is fully saturated for successful crystal growth.
- Do not disturb the jars during the crystallization period.
- Add different food coloring or flavors to customize your rock candy.
- Clean jars thoroughly before use to avoid impurities that affect crystallization.
- Ideal for edible science experiments or party favors.
