Description
A hearty and comforting classic dish! Cracker Barrel’s homemade chicken and dumplings recipe features fluffy dumplings in a savory chicken broth. It’s the perfect meal for cozy nights.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 pinch salt
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 cup milk
- 2 quarts chicken broth
- 3 cups cooked chicken
Instructions
- In a bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Cut the butter into the dry ingredients with a fork or pastry blender.
- Stir in the milk, mixing with a fork until the dough forms a ball.
- Heavily flour a work surface. Roll the dough out thin with a heavily floured rolling pin.
- Cut the dumplings into squares about 2×2-inches with a pizza cutter or your preferred cutter.
- Use a floured spatula to transfer them onto a heavily floured plate, layering them with flour between each layer.
- Bring the chicken broth to a boil and drop the dumplings in one at a time, stirring as you add them. The extra flour will help thicken the broth.
- Cook for about 15-20 minutes or until the dumplings are fully cooked and no longer doughy.
- Add the cooked chicken to the pot, stir, and serve.
Notes
- Make sure to flour your work surface and spatula generously to avoid the dumplings sticking.
- For extra flavor, you can add herbs such as thyme or parsley to the chicken broth.
- Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
