Description

Coney Island Chili Dogs are a nostalgic, classic street food combining juicy hot dogs, a rich and spiced chili sauce, and soft buns. Perfect for quick meals or gatherings, this easy-to-make recipe delivers authentic, comforting flavors with customizable spice levels and toppings to suit any taste.

Ingredients

Scale

Hot Dog Components

  • 8 high-quality beef or pork hot dogs
  • 8 soft but sturdy hot dog buns
  • Mustard, for serving

Chili Sauce

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 2 tbsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Chili Sauce: Heat a skillet over medium heat and brown the ground beef until no longer pink. Add the finely chopped onion and minced garlic; cook until softened. Stir in the tomato sauce, chili powder, cumin, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Let the chili simmer for 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally to develop flavors and thicken the sauce.
  2. Cook the Hot Dogs: While the chili simmers, grill or pan-fry the hot dogs until nicely browned and heated through, adding a smoky flavor that contrasts the chili.
  3. Warm the Buns: Briefly toast the hot dog buns on the grill or in a dry pan until warm and slightly crisp on the edges but still soft inside.
  4. Assemble the Coney Island Chili Dogs: Place a cooked hot dog inside each warmed bun. Generously spoon the chili sauce over the top, then finish with a drizzle of mustard. Optionally, add chopped onions or shredded cheese as desired.

Notes

  • Use fresh chili powder and cumin for better flavor.
  • Avoid overloading the bun with chili to prevent sogginess.
  • Simmer chili long enough to thicken and meld flavors.
  • Select juicy, high-quality sausages for best taste.
  • Serve chili dogs immediately for optimal flavor and texture.
