This Chipotle Steak recipe is a copycat of the popular Chipotle steak you love! With a smoky, spicy kick from chipotles in adobo sauce and the perfect blend of spices, this steak is grilled to perfection for a delicious, flavorful meal.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1/2 – 7 ounce can chipotles in adobo sauce
- 1 teaspoon cumin
- 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1/4 cup coarsely chopped red onion
- 3 garlic cloves
- Juice of 2 limes (about 1/4 cup)
- 3 pounds skirt steak (or flank steak or top sirloin)
- Olive oil, for brushing the grill
Instructions
- Combine chipotles, cumin, black pepper, oregano, salt, red onion, garlic, and lime juice in the bowl of a food processor or blender. The chipotles are spicy, so adjust the quantity based on your heat preference.
- Pulse until the mixture forms a smooth paste.
- Place the steak in a bowl or plastic bag, then pour the marinade over it. Mix well to coat all sides of the steak. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour, or up to 24 hours for more flavor.
- Preheat the grill on high heat for 15-20 minutes. Optionally, brush the grill with olive oil to prevent sticking.
- Take the steak out of the marinade and place it on the hot grill. Grill the steak for 5-8 minutes per side, depending on thickness, until cooked to your desired internal temperature and a bit charred on the outside.
- Let the steak rest for 5 minutes before chopping it into pieces.
- Serve and enjoy!
Notes
- For a spicier kick, add more chipotles from the can.
- Skirt steak, flank steak, or top sirloin all work well for this recipe.
- The marinade works best if you let the steak marinate for a few hours or overnight.
- Make sure not to overcook the steak to maintain tenderness.
