Ingredients

Scale
  1. Garlic Bread Base:
    • 1 loaf Italian bread
    • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
    • 1 teaspoon garlic salt
  2. Sloppy Joe Filling:
    • 1 pound ground beef
    • 1/4 cup yellow onion, chopped
    • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
    • 1 teaspoon yellow mustard
    • 3/4 cup ketchup
    • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
    • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
    • 1/2 cup water
  3. Topping:
    • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
    • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
    • Chopped parsley, for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Garlic Bread Base:
    • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
    • Slice the Italian bread in half lengthwise and spread the softened butter evenly on both halves. Sprinkle with garlic salt.
    • Place the bread on a baking sheet and bake for 10 minutes, or until toasted. Remove and set aside.
  2. Cook the Sloppy Joe Filling:
    • In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and chopped onion until browned and softened, breaking the meat into crumbles.
    • Drain excess fat and stir in garlic powder, mustard, ketchup, kosher salt, black pepper, and water. Simmer for 5 minutes to thicken.
  3. Assemble and Bake:
    • Spoon the beef mixture evenly over the toasted bread halves.
    • Top with shredded mozzarella and cheddar cheese.
    • Return to the oven and bake for 5-7 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  4. Serve and Enjoy:
    • Remove from the oven, garnish with chopped parsley, and slice into servings.

Notes

  • Feel free to swap Italian bread with French bread or ciabatta for a different texture.
  • Add red pepper flakes to the filling for a spicy kick!
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
