Description
A gourmet take on the classic Salisbury steak, inspired by Bobby Flay, featuring tender beef patties smothered in a rich mushroom and onion gravy.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 1/2 lbs ground beef
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 1 egg
- 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp Dijon mustard
- Salt & pepper to taste
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 8 oz mushrooms, sliced
- 2 tbsp butter
- 2 tbsp flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
- Salt & pepper to taste
Instructions
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, chopped onion, egg, breadcrumbs, garlic, Worcestershire sauce, Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined. Shape into 4–6 oval patties.
- Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat and add a splash of oil if needed. Cook the patties until well browned on both sides and cooked through (about 4–5 minutes per side). Transfer to a plate and keep warm.
- In the same skillet, melt the butter. Add sliced onions and mushrooms. Sauté for 7–8 minutes until softened and slightly caramelized.
- Sprinkle in the flour and stir constantly for 1 minute to form a roux. Gradually whisk in the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce, stirring until smooth. Simmer for 5–7 minutes, or until the gravy thickens.
- Return the cooked patties to the skillet. Spoon sauce over the tops, reduce heat to low, and simmer gently for 10 minutes to blend the flavors.
- Optional: Stir in a spoonful of sour cream or sprinkle with fresh herbs before serving. Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, or egg noodles.
Notes
- Do not overmix the beef mixture to keep patties tender.
- For extra depth, use a splash of red wine in the gravy.
- Pairs well with creamy mashed potatoes or buttered noodles.
