  3. ½ cup shortening
  4. 1 cup unsweetened applesauce
  5. ½ cup water
  6. 1 tsp baking soda
  7. 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  8. ½ tsp ground nutmeg
  9. ½ tsp salt
  10. ½ cup chopped nuts (optional)
  11. ½ cup raisins (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat Oven:
    Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13-inch baking pan.
  • Mix Ingredients:
    In a large bowl, mix the flour, sugar, shortening, applesauce, water, baking soda, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until smooth and well combined.
  • Add Nuts and Raisins:
    Stir in the chopped nuts and raisins, if using, to the batter.
  • Bake the Cake:
    Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 45-50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  • Cool:
    Allow the cake to cool completely before serving.

Notes

This cake is great on its own, but you can also add a cream cheese frosting or glaze for extra sweetness.

You can swap the nuts for other favorites, like walnuts or pecans, for a different texture.
