Description

This Amish Hamburger Steak Bake combines savory ground beef, tender potatoes, and gooey cheddar cheese for a comforting and hearty casserole that’s perfect for family dinners. Packed with flavor, this recipe is a guaranteed crowd-pleaser!

Ingredients

Scale
  1. 1 1/2 pounds ground beef
  2. 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  3. 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  4. Salt and pepper to taste
  5. 2 cups milk, divided
  6. 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  7. 45 medium Russet potatoes, thinly sliced
  8. 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  9. 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  • Season the ground beef with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper, then form into 6 patties.
  • Brown the beef patties in a skillet over medium heat and set aside.
  • In the same skillet, whisk 1 cup of milk with the flour to make a gravy. Add the remaining milk and cook, stirring constantly, until thickened.
  • Layer half of the sliced potatoes and onions at the bottom of the prepared baking dish. Place the browned patties on top.
  • Layer the remaining potatoes and onions on top of the patties and pour the gravy evenly over everything.
  • Cover the baking dish with foil and bake for 1 hour.
  • After 1 hour, uncover the casserole, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the top, and bake for an additional 15 minutes or until bubbly and golden brown.

Notes

  • If you prefer a thicker gravy, you can add more flour to the milk mixture.
  • This dish pairs well with a simple green salad or steamed vegetables for a complete meal.
